Upper Susquehanna River Watershed-Cooperstown Area Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study and Integrated Environmental Assessment: Post-Restoration Water Quality and Wildlife Analysis of the FABADS Sites (2003-2004)

چکیده
The Field Assessed Benefit and Design Strategy (FABADS) was introduced by the U.S. Army Cops of Engineers as part of the Upper Susquehanna River WatershedCooperstown Area Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study and Integrated Environmental Assessment. Authorized by the U.S. Congress, the pilot program is “to conduct a study and develop a strategy for using wetland restoration, soil and water conservation practices, and nonstructural measures to reduce flood damage, improve water quality, and create wildlife habitat...” The strategy implemented includes site identification, quantification of the water quality and wildlife benefits achievable through wetland restoration, and application of conclusions drawn from the data to future restoration designs. The FABADS concept takes the necessary and practical steps to bridge the gaps between theory, application, environmental impact and adaptive management.

Agricultural and urban development causes nutrients to become concentrated at upland sites (Drexler and Bedford, 2002; Detenbeck et al., 2002). The subsequent flux of these nutrients through ground and surface water flow often overwhelms the receiving waters; the ability of lakes, rivers, and streams to normally assimilate and transport these nutrients is surpassed and results abnormally high p...
متن کاملWater Quality Restoration Using Landscape Metrics Analysis: A Case Study in the Golestan Province of Iran
Abstract The results of an integrated study aimed at restoring water quality in a large watershed including seven catchments in north east Iran are presented in this paper. This case study demonstrates how landscape metrics reflect direct or surrogate causes of the land use practices that are the determinants of water quality parameters. Water quality factors included EC, pH, Cl-1, HCO3-1, SO4-...

Cost-effective targeting of conservation activities has only recently been addressed by economists. Most work to date has focused on finding the best locations to set aside land for the protection of biodiversity. An economic approach to the problem, where biodiversity reserve networks are delineated to maximize the number of species protected subject to a budget constraint, has been shown to b...
متن کاملEnvironmental risk assessment of a dam during construction phase
The present study was conducted to assess the possible risks induced by construction of Gavi Dam in Ilam Province; western part of Iran, using MIKE-11 model and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution. For this purpose, vulnerable zone of the dam site against the flooding risk of Gavi River was calculated for different return periods. The flooding zones were stimulated...
